Drink drivers targeted

23/07/2008 2:07:00 PM
WIMMERA drink drivers travelling on remote roads and in towns will have nowhere to hide if Horsham Traffic Management Unit is successful in a funding application.

Horsham TMU's Sergeant Wayne Caddy said he has applied for Transport Accident Commission money to fund more police on Wimmera roads from October to December.

Sgt Caddy said the $16,000 grant would pay police officers to work on rest days.

"Due to the large number of high alcohol readings I've applied to the TAC to fund further operations on our roads," he said.

"We will have a covert vehicle targeting vehicles on remote roads and towns near the South Australian border."

Sgt Caddy said he had lists from Wimmera hotels and clubs about drivers likely to drive home after drinking.

He warned people to think twice before drink driving.

"If you want to take the risk you will lose your licence," he said.

Sgt Caddy said a spate of drink drivers in the last month has prompted his action.

"In Horsham there were three drink drivers caught in one night. That's ridiculous," he said.

"The readings we're getting have also increased. Its a worrying trend. A recipe for disaster."

Sgt Caddy said he would find out in August if the funding application was successful.

"If the grant is approved we will be putting in a big effort to remove drink drivers from our roads," he said.
