Fire crews put plans to action

23/07/2008 2:07:00 PM
THE Region 17 Country Fire Authority operations team swept into an incident action plan on Monday morning to cope with the fire at Johnson Asahi.

More than 35 firefighters were called out to the large hay fire at 3am on Monday, when another shed fire in Albert Street, Horsham, began.

But Region 17 operations officer Richard Bourke said resources were not stretched.

"The second tanker from Horsham went to the shed fire so that was well and truly covered," he said.

Mr Bourke said Wimmera brigades from Horsham, Wonwondah, Noradjuha, Green Lake and Vectis played key roles in fighting the fire.

"Our volunteers did a wonderful job, they were there right from the start," he said.

"They then worked through the night on Monday night, and it was a very cold night."

Mr Bourke said Ballarat City brigade were also called to the fire to provide a large telescopic platform, a truck, pumper and refilling truck to help with breathing apparatus for firefighters.

Mr Bourke said fire chiefs developed an incident action plan to handle the situation.

"Objectives on how we're going to proceed with the fire fighting and strategies were developed," he said.

Mr Bourke said firefighters from the Horsham brigade were in charge of the situation.

"They are trained to handle incidents like this, it's a major job," he said.
