On the road to see Kosky

5/09/2008 1:27:00 PM
WIMMERA Regional Transport Group representatives will meet with state Transport Minister Lynne Kosky on Thursday to discuss rail, B-triple trucks and duplication of the Western Highway.

Darryl Argall, David Eltringham, Bernard Gross and Harold Flett will meet privately with Ms Kosky in Melbourne, and try to organise a date for the minister to visit Wimmera roads.

Cr Argall said rail was a high priority issue to discuss.

"We want to talk to her about the rail not being used and the cost it will have on local roads and the state road network," he said.

Cr Argall said the group was also concerned about the threat of B-triples on the Western Highway.

"There are major safety factors," he said.

"Why has the Hume Freeway almost had complete duplication and the Western Highway is only duplicated to Ballarat and Murray Bridge?

"They had better hurry up and do more duplication of the Western Highway and I'll be suggesting duplication all the way through."

Cr Argall said the group would also discuss the Dooen Intermodal Freight Hub and sustainability issues relating to the Federal Government's carbon emissions scheme.

"We will be asking what the Victorian Government can do about the scheme, which seems to favour trucks and not rail," he said.

Cr Argall said Ms Kosky had agreed to visit Wimmera roads but a date was yet to be finalised.

"We have invited the minister to come up in November when the harvest is on, and travel between Horsham and Nhill at midnight," he said.

Cr Argall said the group had made submissions to the State Government's Transport Plan, due to be released by the end of 2008.

A Victorian transport summit, convened by Premier John Brumby today at Telstra Dome, is part of the consultation process for the plan.

Wimmera Development Association executive director Philip Sabien will attend the summit, which will bring together representatives from transport, planning, environment and construction industries.

Cr Argall said he had attended a regional forum at Creswick two weeks ago with Cr Flett and Northern Grampians Mayor Bryan Small.
