WEST Wimmera Shire Council has launched an investigation into the lack of public transport in the shire.
Chief executive Jim McKay said no town had public transport.
"There is none whatsoever, no taxis, no buses," he said.
"The Department of Infrastructure is in the process of looking at addressing the issue of transport to other areas.
"But we need to look at internal transport."
Mr McKay said this included council providing a taxi service, car pooling program or a small bus for transport.
He said council would look at buying a community car.
"But we would obviously have to look into that," he said.
"You couldn't just do it in one town."
Mr McKay said the only public transport was a daily service between Edenhope and Naracoorte.
"We're looking at our options at meeting some of the demand," he said.
"The services that are passing through the shire are not always convenient because of the times they run."
Mr McKay said providing alternative transport options helped retain people in the shire.
"It's bigger than just fixing one problem," he said.
"If people can't get to work because there is no transport then they will move closer to their work and we lose them.
"This is about retaining people in the shire and providing opportunities to grow the community."
Mr McKay said he would present the council with options at the next council meeting on August 7.
