HORSHAM Mayor Pam Clarke has described driving in Horsham at night like playing Russian roulette because of trucks running red lights.
At Monday night's meeting Cr Clarke said the council had asked VicRoads to investigate the problem of heavy vehicles driving through red lights in Horsham.
Cr Clarke said the council had also asked VicRoads to solve other issues such as the intersection of the Henty Highway, Western Highway and Golf Course Road, Horsham bypass and the influence of climate change on road construction techniques.
"It's like playing Russian roulette driving around this town at night," she said.
Cr Clarke said the traffic lights at the intersection of Baillie and Firebrace streets was one of the main problem areas.
"I've nearly been collected a couple of times," she said.
"It's a really big issue for this community."
Cr Michael Ryan described the intersection of Henty Highway, Western Highway and Golf Course Road as disastrous.
Technical services manager David Eltringham said a new design for the intersection had been prepared and would be presented to the council as soon as possible.
"VicRoads has indicated it will put it out for construction later this year," he said.
Acting Sergeant Gavin Frew, of Horsham Traffic Management Unit, said it was not a problem police were targeting.
"We haven't received any specific complaints but we sometimes catch them," he said.
"It probably happens more at night but that's because there are more trucks around. It's very dangerous to run red lights at any time of the day."
