AN INTERNATIONAL investigation into alleged paedophile activity in an internet chat room ended in Horsham.
An American teenage girl lodged complaints with American police about comments she received in an internet chat room.
She suspected the sexually explicit comments were from a paedophile.
American police passed the complaint onto Australian authorities who notified Victoria Police, who notified Horsham police.
Detective Sergeant Stephen Walker said Horsham teenage girls had emailed inappropriate messages to an American teenager, making the American think she was communicating with a paedophile.
The Horsham teenagers asked the American teenager for naked pictures of herself and engaged in sexual bullying.
"Young people in Horsham have got onto an active chat room and sent some inappropriate text to a person in America," Det Sgt Walker said.
"Although these people haven't committed an offence they've created an international investigation that ended up here in Horsham."
Det Sgt Walker said police tracked the Horsham teenagers' MySpace account and email address.
He said police had interviewed two Horsham 15-year-old girls.
"The consequences could have been a lot worse," he said.
"At this stage no charges are going to be made."
Det Sgt Walker said Horsham teenage girls had used a friend's MySpace account and email address, without her knowing, to communicate with the American teenager.
"They sent inappropriate emails to an American girl who thought there might be a paedophile on the other end," he said.
"The email aroused her suspicions and that is why she reported it.
"It's good it wasn't a paedophile but it's a lesson for the girls involved."
