AFL legends inspire in football heartland

AUSTRALIAN football's heartland Moyston celebrated 150 years of Australia's favourite pastime with a blockbuster two days.

AFL legends Kevin Sheedy and Robert `Dipper' DiPierdomenico were both on hand to celebrate with the community where football's founding father Tom Wills grew up.

Moyston-Willaura Football Netball Club president Ruth Brain said it was an overwhelming success with more than 300 attending the training session Sheedy oversaw, and 220 packing into the clubrooms for speeches from Sheedy and renowned football writer Martin Flanagan.

"It was absolutely brilliant, the crowd was enthralled by the speakers," Mrs Brain said.

She said it was especially special considering Moyston-Willaura were preparing to play their first final against Caramut in the Mininera District Football League elimination final on Saturday.

Moyston was then put on the national scene when Channel 9's Today Show broadcast live from the celebrations in the morning yesterday, before the AFL Roadshow truck was in town for the rest of the morning.

Sheedy said he enjoyed the opportunity to get around Australia, and the world, to promote the AFL.

"It has been good, I have just been keeping an eye on how everything is going and the skill levels of players and so on," Sheedy said.

"I have been to Canada, America and South America and I am coming up to my third time going around Australia. I think my wife's name is Geraldine, I got a message from her the other day saying `Remember me?"'
