Big V call up

23/07/2008 2:19:00 PM
THREE Horsham District Football League players will line-up for the Big V on Friday at the Australian Country Football Championships in division two.

Kalkee player Grant Schultz will join his brother and coach Steve Schultz and Laharum joint coach Phil Butsch.

Steve Schultz and Butsch represented the state team against the Victorian Amateur Football Association last month.

Vice-captain of the team Steve Schultz said he looked forward to the opportunity to mix it with some of Australia's best country footballers.

"It should be good, the carnival set- up will be a little bit different to the one-off matches that I have played in the past," Schultz said.

"And it will be good to play other teams from across Australia and see where we are at."

Schultz said coach Ron Thomas added his brother Grant Schultz to the team after Thomas watched the brothers' round-13 match against Laharum.

"I think they were looking for a back-up ruckman that could push forward, and the Ballarat selector knew him from when he was at Ballarat so the coach came and watched us play against Laharum," he said.

"He is pretty rapt."

Schultz said it would be a good experience to play in a representative side with his brother.

"It is a bit of an extra buzz, it is not every day that you get to play in a state team with your brother," he said.

He said the team had two valuable training sessions in the past two weeks.

"There have only been 25 to 26 blokes at the training, so we have got to know everyone's names, and really that is the most important thing," he said.

Butsch said after their win against the VAFA he was excited about the opportunity to play at the championships.

"Everyone is excited about it and looking forward to it," Butsch said.

"We should do pretty well."

The Mallee Football League also has three representatives in the team.

Walpeup-Underbool's Vaughan Noonan, Beulah's Justin Clarke and Sea Lake-Nandaly Tigers Simon Weekley will all play in the team.

The Victorian team's campaign begins against Queensland and the Aboriginal All Stars on Friday, before finals are played on Sunday.

All division two matches are played at Mooroopna.

•Minyip-Murtoa key forward Clinton Midgley has narrowly missed selection in the Victorian team that will defend their division-one crown at the Australian Country Football Championships.
