WIMMERA league veteran Stuart Farr will lead the Big W into its interleague campaign at Stawell on May 24 and 25.
Farr, a pivotal cog in the Horsham Demons' five consecutive premierships and current coach, was announced as captain of the elite squad with Stawell Warriors premier defender Ben Williamson to serve as his vice-captain.
Farr said his fourth time as captain was again an honour.
"You probably don't aim to be captain, but you always strive to, or put your hand up to represent the league," Farr said. "When it comes along it is certainly a huge honour."
Farr said he had never had any hesitation in putting his hand up to represent the league.
"It is the best standard of footy you can play in the Wimmera league," he said. "You learn so much on and off the field, training and playing with the best players from across the Wimmera. And you make some really good friendships there as well."
Farr said his highlights from previous interleague campaigns had been captaining the team that won the last VCFL Country Championships in 2004 in Horsham, and his first selection playing as an 18-year-old alongside players he had looked up to.
He said he was looking forward to lining up alongside the cream of the Wimmera league.
"It is a very talented squad that will suit the format of the carnival, in the round robin," he said. "We have a good mix of experience and youth."
Williamson, 23, said his appointment as vic-captain was unexpected.
"It is obviously a huge honour just playing, but being vice-captain is big," Williamson said.
He said he had only been part of one previous campaign at Warrnambool, suffering a rib injury in the first game and not playing again.
Williamson, who has been captain of Stawell since 2004, said it would be a buzz to play at Stawell.
"To play at Stawell will be huge. I want to take this opportunity while we can, because I don't know how many more I will get," he said.
Big W coach Scott Batchelor said the captains picked themselves.
"Stuey has always put his hand up to represent the Wimmera league, and he has always certainly been in the top couple as far as leadership goes," he said.
"Ben is quite experienced for a young footballer, and I have always like the way he goes about it, he throws his body into every contest and you have to like a player like that."
