PENOLA took out a thrilling three- point win against a resurgent Kaniva- Leeor United in the Kowree- Naracoorte-Tatiara Football League on Saturday.
Kaniva-Leeor kicked the last two goals of the match while, despite kicking into the wind.
The Cougars also had a shot at goal in the dying minutes which hit the post.
Kaniva-Leeor coach Shane Dodson said the club had left it too late to get the win.
"We are a bit shattered about being so close to another win," Dodson said.
"We had the wind in the third quarter and I think the guys thought it would do the job for us and our work rate dropped off. They kicked two goals into the wind and we couldn't get those goals back."
Both sides had a nervous wait after the siren because the scoreboard was wrong for most of the last quarter.
"We had a nervous few minutes waiting for the goal umpires to confirm the score," Dodson said.
"We were probably a bit unlucky in the end that we couldn't get that final goal but we probably run out of legs."
Penola coach Paul Mullen said he had thought his side was up.
"The scoreboard said we were in front by a goal," Mullen said.
"I thought we were actually up by two or three goals and they had missed a couple but the final margin ended up being only three points."
Penola midfielder Spencer Jackman, 16, was his side's best player and Mullen paid tribute to him after the game.
"Spencer has a bright future ahead of him," Mullen said. "When you can be your sides best player as a 16 year old then you are destined for bigger things."
Kaniva Leeor half back Jason Sutherland was again best player his side and Dodson said he had been very good.
