Injury sours Rams win

14/07/2008 11:50:00 AM
NATIMUK played an inspired game to defeat Swifts by 37 points at Natimuk.

The Rams lost 17-year-old ruckman Bryce Hateley to a serious neck injury in the opening minutes of the match and after a delay of about 30 minutes, while Hateley was treated, came out and controlled the match to win comfortably.

Rams coach Nathan Fidler said his side had been shaken up by Hateley's injury.

"We had to go back into the rooms the delay was so long," Fidler said.

"The boys were all shaken up but they came back out and played really well.

"Everyone lifted and wanted to win the game for Bryce."

The game was shortened to 20-minute quarters with no time-on after Hateley's injury.

The injury over-shadowed the Ram's fifth win of the season and Fidler said it had been a milestone he had set his side at the start of the season.

"We set ourselves the goal of winning five matches," Fidler said.

"We have met that goal now so I want at least three more and hopefully we can beat one or two of the teams above us."

Swifts coach Jamie Britten said his side had let itself down.

"After the long delay we got offered the chance to end the game or start it again," Britten said.

"Our players wanted to play so we came back out.

"But we let ourselves down in our discipline and accountability. In the contests we were fine but once the ball come out we didn't man-up and it hurt us."

Rams utility Ash Pekin returned to the side after an ankle injury and he found form kicking two goals.

"It was good to have Ash back," Fidler said.

"I am sure he will find his match fitness quickly and get back into top form. He was one of our best players before his injury."

Fidler also praised the Ram's goal kicking, which had troubled them earlier in the season.

"To kick 10 goals in those conditions was good," Fidler said.

"The conditions weren't good and the game was pretty scrappy.

Rams forward Shannon Emmerton kicked three goals while Brett Pekin also kicked two goals.

Swifts player Ricky Whitehead was his club's best player while Fidler and Sam Anson were best for the Rams.
