KALKEE forward Phil Mills kicked his 100th goal of the season on Saturday against Noradjuha- Quantong.
Mills, 35, has played in the last line of defence for the Kees his whole career and this year got his long awaited chance in the Kees reserves forward line which he has taken with both hands.
"I have been telling them for 20 years that I am a forward. I didn't expect to kick as many goals as I have," he said.
"But it has been fun and something different."
Mills was on 87 goals at the start of the round and had not expected to bring up his century, but as the goals came in he realised his moment might come earlier than he had planned.
"I thought it would be a long way off," Mills said. "Noradjuha- Quantong is a good side and so is Pimpino which we have on Saturday, so I didn't think it would come up for a couple of weeks."
But going into the last quarter Mills had kicked nine goals and had the 100 in his sights.
His 100th goal came in open play.
"I snapped a goal with my left foot," Mills said.
"There was no-one running onto the field or anything. We were kicking to the far end at Kalkee so it was too far for anyone to run down to.
"Then I got dragged. I suppose they thought I needed a spell."
Mills finished the match with 13 goals and the Kees reserves defeated Noradjuha-Quantong by 156 points but he could not stay around to celebrate.
"We had committed to go to an engagement party in Melbourne for a relative," he said. "So we had a quick drink and then hit the road.
"I was regretting having said we would go. But I didn't think I would get anywhere near it."
Mills said he had enjoyed his role and had a new appreciation for forwards.
"I have copped a few behind the ear this season," he said. "But I have given out plenty in my time. It is just part of the game."
