Hornets need one

8/08/2008 11:58:00 AM
HORSHAM Hornets want to seal their place in the Big V basketball league grand final by beating the Western Port Steelers in game two of their semi-final series at Horsham stadium tomorrow night at 7pm.

The Hornets lead the best of three series 1-0 after beating the Steelers on Saturday and they want to take care of business in game two and avoid a deciding game three.

If Western Port win tomorrow night the deciding game three will be in Horsham on Sunday afternoon at 2pm.

Hornets coach Barry McTaggart said the Hornets would only need one game.

"Winning this game is almost as crucial as winning game one," McTaggart said. "We don't want to be playing a deciding game on Sunday. It would put an awful amount of pressure on us."

Hornets captain Tim Pickert said he wanted a big crowd to welcome the Steelers.

"We would love to see a big crowd there tomorrow night," Pickert said. "We will need all the support we can get."

The Hornets will be boosted by the early return of point guard Cam Bruce who injured his shoulder three weeks ago.

Bruce was not expected to return until next week but trained with the team on Tuesday.

"I was a bit surprised when he told me he was right to play, but he did everything we asked of him and proved his fitness. I am not sure whether he will start or come off the bench. I will decide that on game night," McTaggart said.

He said the Hornets had to improve its defence from last match.

"We lagged off them a bit and didn't get into the passing lanes enough," McTaggart said. "We also have to fix our slow start. We can't afford to have a slow start in the finals or we will get beaten."

Steelers' 194-centimetre big- man Kevin Benn will again be the focus for the Hornets despite being restricted to 11 points in game one.

"We will have to continue to keep him out of the game," McTaggart said. "We also let Travis Maher get too many open shots in game one. He might not shoot that well again but we can't give him the chance to get hot again."

Game times: Horsham Hornets v Western Port Steelers at Horsham Stadium tomorrow night at 7pm. Game three, if needed, Horsham Hornets v Western Port Steelers at Horsham Stadium Sunday afternoon 2pm.
