One last test for Hornets

11/08/2008 10:26:00 AM
HORSHAM Hornets booked a place in the Big V basketball league grand final.

The Hornets were dominant in a 125-75 win against Western Port Steelers in game two of a semi-final series at Horsham Basketball Stadium on Saturday night.

The Hornets swept the best of three series two-nil.

The Hornets tore the game open in the second quarter, scoring 38 points to 10, powered by 13 points from a red-hot Shaun Bruce.

Swarming defence and lighting-fast offence saw the Hornets score with ease in the second half allowing Hornets coach Barry McTaggart to play his bench players for extended time.

"Our intensity and run was the best we have had for the time I have been coaching," he said.

"This was Hornets basketball. We push hard, run the ball and beat our opposition up the court.

"I had the bench in for most of the fourth quarter. I could have kept the starters out there and won by 70 or 80 points."

Hornets captain Tim Pickert was the driving force of the team scoring a game-high 27 points, most of them in the first half.

Star guard Liam Norton added 26 while Shaun Bruce finished with 17. Six Hornets scored in double figures.

McTaggart said the Hornets would struggle to play any better than they did against the Steelers.

"We shot a very high percentage in the first half, something like 59 per cent," McTaggart said.

Steelers coach Adrian Giblin said the Hornets would be hard to beat in the grand final.

"I hope they have nothing left in the tank," Giblin said.

"If they can find 10 or 15 more points then we are wasting our time playing a grand final series."

Hornets bigmen Marcus Wright and Damien Skurrie continued their fearless defence on bruising Steelers forward Kevin Benn, keeping him to 10 points and 17 rebounds while also pressuring him into 10 turnovers.

"The Hornets did their homework on Kevin," Giblin said.

The Steelers struggled without experienced guard Justin Bourchier who missed the series with an ankle injury.

"We had no one in our side with playoffs experience and it showed," Giblin said.

The Hornets were also boosted by the return of point guard Cam Bruce after a shoulder injury. He started the match, played 24 minutes and scored eight points with seven assists.

"A few people doubted whether I should have started Cam tonight," McTaggart said.

"But he showed he was ready to play and he will be much better for the run."

The Hornets will play game one of the grand final series on Saturday night against McKinnon at Oakleigh Recreation Centre.
