EDENHOPE teenager Tom McDonald will travel to the United States in December to play basketball, just two years after first playing the game.
McDonald, 15, has been selected to tour the US with the AND1 elite under-18 basketball team that will take on US high school sides in Phoenix, Albuquerque, Las Vegas and Los Angeles.
The team will play 13 matches in its 21-day tour.
The 192cm teenager began playing at the Kowree Basketball Association but soon showed potential and was invited to join the Horsham Hornets under-18 squad.
"I decided to try basketball a couple of years ago and found that I really enjoyed it," McDonald said.
"My mum looked on the net to look for ways I could improve.
"She found the AND1 basketball camps which are run in Melbourne. I went to one and felt I got a lot out of it. They invited me to try out for this team earlier in the year.
"I was very excited when they called and invited me to join the team."
McDonald was one of only five Victorian players selected for the team which also have players from Sydney and Brisbane.
The Edenhope athlete, who also plays football for the North Ballarat Rebels under-16 team, said he could not wait to try his luck in the US.
"It is going to be pretty awesome" McDonald said.
"I was pretty busy playing football this past few months but I am really keen to get back into basketball leading up to December."
But McDonald said he did not know much more about the players he would be playing against.
"We have been told some of the schools are going to be very even with us and some are going to be very tough to play against," he said.
"There will also be US college scouts there and they will be taping our games, so maybe I might be able to get some interest from a US college."
His team will be coached by former US National Basketball Association point guard Sedale Threatt who now lives in Melbourne.
Threatt played with Los Angeles Lakers and other NBA teams and McDonald said he looked forward to learning from him.
"He is also going to try and get us into a private practise session with the Lakers," McDonald said. "And maybe into an NBA game."
McDonald is looking for sponsors to help cover the cost of his trip.
"I would love some support to help me get over there," McDonald said.
"I am trying to go from Edenhope to LA, it's a pretty long way to travel."
McDonald said anyone interested in sponsoring him could call his mother Cathryn McDonald on 5588 6212 or 0429 991 071.
