Cricket shake-up

BLACKHEATH Cricket Club will return to the Horsham Cricket Association A Grade competition for season 2008-09.

The club has been absent from A Grade competition for more than a decade, and last season only fielded a B Grade team that finished seventh.

An initial application to the association board was rejected, but an appeal on Wednesday night saw them included in the proposed new-look nine team A Grade competition.

Reigning B Grade premiers Noradjuha will also make the move up.

Blackheath secretary Michael McGough said it was the new look structure of the club that swayed the board to overturn the decision.

"We have been readmitted based on the back of our strong junior program," McGough said.

"We have the commitment of ex- juniors who have committed to coming back to us."

McGough said competition rising stars Hamish Exell, Harry Young and Adam Taylor had all committed to the club, while other prominent former juniors were also in the mix.

McGough said the club had acquired the services of Homers all- rounder Jason Templeton as captain- coach.

He said it was a major win for the community.

"It is a great win for us, and especially for the young guys like Hamish Exell and Harry Young, whose fathers have been stalwarts of the club," McGough said.

"They can come back and play cricket at the highest level in the region with their home club."

Their fathers Greg Exell and Rich Young are still heavily involved with the club's junior program.

Exell said he was happy the club was back in the competition's premier division.

Association president Howard Schier said he welcomed the return of Blackheath to A Grade.

"Their submission was impressive, they have a really good structure at the club with a good junior program," Schier said.

"I think we need to offer them the opportunity to have an A Grade side."

Blackheath Cricket Club will play home games at Kalkee, and is looking for turf wickets to play on.

The club's annual general meeting will be on August 20 at 7.30pm at Kalkee.

Other highlights of the Horsham Cricket Association proposed structure were Jung Tigers adding a junior development B Grade team, and nine teams playing in the B Grade competition and 12 in C Grade.
