Darcy's leg break setback

23/07/2008 2:10:00 PM
RISING Wimmera cricket talent Darcy O'Connor has suffered a major setback, severely breaking a leg.

O'Connor, who plays football for Horsham Saints under-17 team, broke his leg in their round 13 encounter with Warrack Eagles at Coughlin Park.

Mother Tracey O'Connor said Darcy did not receive good news from a doctor this week.

"He has fractured two bones in his leg, and they actually found that one of them is actually in the growing plate," Mrs O'Connor said.

"We have to go to Ballarat now to see what to do next."

Mrs O'Connor said Darcy would be examined by respected orthopaedic surgeon Andrew Byrne.

She said he was extremely disappointed by this setback, particularly for its possible effect on his cricket future.

"Darcy has been trying out with the under-18 Western Waves and was a fair way along in that," she said.

"He was really keen on that, and obviously now he will have to sit out for a while so he is really disappointed."

O'Connor had a breakout season with the Horsham Saints A grade team last summer establishing himself as one of the hottest young prospects in the Wimmera.

His leg spin bowling claimed headlines when after his first three games he claimed 12 wickets at an average of 9.25, before compiling a solid season.
