Junior drive

20/08/2008 11:47:00 AM
WIMMERA junior cricket officials will create an under-12 competition that will begin for the 2008-09 season.

The competition is likely to incorporate different zones to limit major travel times for the junior players, focusing more on participation.

At this stage the group believes they have enough interest for a western zone that would feature a joint Quantong- Natimuk, Edenhope, Goroke and a joint Miga Lake-Harrow; an eastern zone with Minyip, Murtoa and Rupanyup; a central zone with Horsham-based clubs Jung Tigers, Colts and Horsham Saints; and eventually a northern zone of Nhill, Dimboola and Warracknabeal.

The group of officials behind the push are Quantong's Simon Hallett, Jung Tigers' Carl Sudholz, Horsham Saints' Trent King, and Gary Davidson who will be a co-ordinator through the region's schools, and Cricket Victoria officials rural cricket development manager John Harris and regional manager Stephen Field.

Hallett said the aim of the project was to fill the gap that existed between Cricket Victoria's In2Cricket program, formerly Milo Have-A-Go, which is aimed at children five to nine, and the jump straight into under-14 competition.

"It is all about participation, we have to get that level back up. We have so many single- team struggling clubs in the area, and people need to realise that kids are the key to any club's success," he said.

"We have to make sure we have a strong junior base at as many clubs as we can."

Hallett said it was a big step forward for Wimmera cricket.

"This is a really good step, it is the resurgence of cricket in the area. It has been a long time in the making, but the hardest thing is getting it running, once we do that it will create interest and people will want to get involved," Hallett said.

Cricket Victoria's John Harris said schools would provide a key aspect of the project.

"A major part of the project will be tapping into the schools program that is running with Super 8s at high schools and Kanga 8s at primary schools," Harris said.

"There is a high interest in cricket in the schools program, so we are looking to link that with club cricket."

Hallett said people seeking further information or wanting to express interest in the competition should call him on 0410 586 482, or attend an informal meeting for expressions of interest on Monday at Horsham Football Club social rooms from 6.30pm before Horsham Cricket Association's annual meeting.
