Kane wins in play-off

BOORT golfer Andrew Kane survived a nail-biting play-off to win Horsham Golf Club's open amateur tournament on Sunday.

The 36-hole tournament was a qualifiying event for the Ivo Whitton Trophy.

The trophy is awarded to the Victorian amateur golfer with the lowest average stroke score after all qualifying events.

Kane finished with scores of 78 and 70 to tie with Dion Clemmens who carded two rounds of 74.

Kane won the tournament on the first play-off hole.

Horsham Golf Club captain Iain McNee said the event had attracted a full field of 84 golfers.

"It was a fantastic day and the golf was good," McNee said.

"It was good to see a lot turn up showing that the course is held in high regard."

McNee said the course was well prepared.

"The CCR (calculated course rating) was 73 and that is about as good as it gets," he said.

Tournament secretary Peter Fechner said the course was exceptional.

"They weren't able to beat par, so the course won on the day," Fechner said.

"The conditions were certainly tough, but they were not bad enough to affect blokes of their ability and that just goes to show the quality of the golf course."

Horsham member Anthony Smith of Ararat finished third and won the nearest the pin on the second hole.

Horsham member Michael Bates had the best nett score in the morning with 71.

The last Ivo Whitton Trophy qualifying event will be played on December 18 before the winner is announced.
