A STAR-STUDDED field of Victoria's best amateur golfers will compete in the Victorian Country Golf Championships at Horsham Golf Club starting on Monday.
The five-day tournament will see 189 competitors tackle the Horsham course for the first time in the annual events history which began in 1910.
Women's Golf Victoria publicity manager Suzie Ingle said there would be plenty of action.
"The week-long tournament will include the Country Championship, Glenelg Cup for handicaps between 19 and 35, and the Marion Dwyer Country Foursomes," Ingle said.
The Marion Dwyer 36-hole Foursomes will feature 61 pairs.
Sam Booth and Carmel Bourne will be looking to win the cup for the third consecutive year, but will face stiff opposition from Mandy Buckley and Marilyn Clifford, and former winners Judy Langford and Sue Vandemerwe.
Wimmera main hopes will be on the shoulders of Nhill duo Elizabeth Lacey and Paula Davis, and Horsham members June Crabtree and Elizabeth Jackman.
The 36-hole championship event will begin on Tuesday and Wednesday with a quality field consisting of 25 players on single figure handicaps and 38 players on a handicap of 10.
Ingle said the quality of players would ensure tough competition.
Torquay's Mandy Buckley will be out to avenge her loss in last year's final and also the 1999 final, while Cobden's Debbie Rix, who was the top qualifier in 2001 and 2006, and Yarrawonga's Judy Langford, who was a runner-up in 1998, will provide a challenge.
Wimmera hopes are likely to rest with Nhill trio Lacey, Carolyn Croke and Davis, or Horsham members Crabtree and Margaret Taylor who will have the home course advantage.
All action will tee off from 7.30am with Marion Dwyer Foursomes on Monday, championship on Tuesday and Wednesday and Glenelg Cup stableford and match play finals on Thursday and Friday.
