VICTORIA'S best amateur female golfers will descend on Horsham Golf Club for the Victorian Country Golf Championships early next month.
A strong field of 189 competitors will tackle the Horsham course for the annual event between August 4 to 8.
Competitors will come from all the districts in Victoria that have entered this competition since 1910.
The tournament includes the Country Championship, Glenelg Cup, and the Marion Dwyer Country Foursomes.
Event spokeswoman Suzie Ingle said the competition would be fierce.
"The standard is very high, with a lot of the ladies that are coming having very low handicaps," Ingle said.
She said Torquay's Mandy Buckley will be keen to avenge her loss in the championship and would be a front runner, along with Cobden's Debbie Rix.
Wimmera golfers Elizabeth Lacey, Carolyn Croke and Paula Davis all from Nhill, and Horsham's June Crabtree and Margaret Taylor will be players to watch with their knowledge of the course.
In the Marion Dwyer Country Foursomes Sam Booth and Carmel Bourne will be the pair to beat as they set themselves for their third consecutive year.
Ingle said the reason the tournament was heading to Horsham was because of the standard of the course.
"It is one of the bigger fields that we have attracted in recent years and that is because we have changed our focus and looked to use better courses," she said.
"Horsham was chosen pure and simply as it is one of the premier country Victorian course."
Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday will see most competitors on course, before match play finals for the best eight players will be held on Thursday and Friday.
