Mibus steps our for 350th time

16/07/2008 11:11:00 AM
LAHARUM stalwart Michele Mibus will create history with her 350th senior match on Saturday.

Mibus, 46, is the Demons' most decorated player and the first to reach 350 games.

She will play in the Demons' B Grade team against Noradjuha- Quantong at Laharum.

Mibus started playing with Laharum in 1979.

She is a multiple Lois Grimble Memorial A Grade best and fairest winner, was runner-up in an A Grade league best and fairest count and was awarded a life membership with Laharum Netball Club in 1992.

She has served in all office positions with the club and coaches the under-13 team.

"To play 350 games is a big milestone. I have a lot of netball behind me," Mibus said.

"It's overwhelming to achieve something like it. It's not something everyone can do."

Players will form a guard of honour for the defender before Saturday's match.

"To be the first in the club shows a dedication to the club," she said.

"Our whole family plays football and netball and supports the club."

Her husband Glenn, daughter Bianca and sons Cameron, Jarrod and Daniel are all involved in the club.

"Playing 350 games means I'm close to retirement," she said.

"I would like to play with Bianca for one season but that means I can't retire. Maybe we could just play one game."

Mibus said a highlight of her time with the Mountain Maids was playing with close friend Barb Kelly.

"The years I played with Barb Kelly would be the best years for enjoyment," she said.

"But coach wise, Julie Burke was one of the hardest coaches we've ever had. She really made you work. She's inspirational and really motivated you and pushed you.

"That's important because you respect the coach then.

"You played your best netball under her because she would get the best out of you."

Mibus said never playing in a premiership with Laharum was the disappointment of her career.

"I've lost four grand finals to Kalkee. I've never won a grand final, so I'm hoping this year to win one with my under-13s," she said.

"Maybe I'll get my satisfaction from that one."

Mibus said netball had changed since she first started in the juniors.

"Back in my day, netball was a non- contact sport. Yes, there are contact rules, but these days players deliberately cause a contact to win the game," she said.

"Yes, you play for enjoyment and probably to win but deliberate contacts are not called for. The spirit of the game is not the same any more."

Mibus also noted a change in uniforms and Laharum's upgrade to a new tennis and netball court complex at Cameron Oval Reserve as major changes in her career.
