Australian cycling coach to stand trial on teen rape charges

4/09/2008 12:54:00 PM
A 15-year-old US girl who accused West Australian cycling coach Rick Lee of rape claimed on an adult dating website to be a 19-year-old brain surgery student, his lawyer has argued.

The girl had several online and text conversations with Lee, 51, before he arrived at her house in Lehigh Township, Pennsylvania, the local morningcall.com website reported attorney Christopher Shipman as saying.

Mr Shipman's account of events leading up to the alleged rape did not sway District Judge William Zaun to drop the charges.

Judge Zaun overnight ordered Lee to face trial on charges of rape, statutory rape, burglary, involuntary deviate sexual intercourse, sexual assault, aggravated indecent assault, indecent assault and indecent exposure.

A trial date is yet to be set.

During last night's hearing, prosecutors dropped charges of burglary and criminal trespass.

Lee, a former Australian Youth Olympic team coach, was leading a team of 10 junior cyclists on a tour to Pennsylvania.

He was arrested on July 16 and charged with raping the girl at her family's house on July 15.

The day after his arrest, his wife Debbie told WAtoday.com.au that rape would be "totally out of character".

"I know my husband. He's morally done something very wrong, no doubt, but he has definitely not done anything against the girl's will," Mrs Lee said at the time.

"He's not the kind of guy who would do anything against anyone's wishes."

The alleged victim last night testified that Lee pushed her to the ground and held her down and sat on her.

Later under cross-examination by Mr Shipman, she had trouble remembering what happened that day.

She admitted to setting up the online profile in which she said she claimed to be 18, a nurse and a brain surgery student at Pennsylvania State University.

No explanation was available for the discrepancy in ages between her testimony and what Mr Shipman is reported to have told the court.

After the hearing, Mr Shipman told morningcall.com that, once state police had finished testing her and Lee's computers and mobile phones, he hoped "more of the truth" would be revealed.

Lee faces a jail sentence of up to 20 years if convicted.

Wearing an orange prison jumpsuit, Lee was escorted by sheriffs out of the court facility back to Northampton County Prison where he has been held since his arrest.

He is being held on $US125,000 ($149,000) bail.
